So I have discovered Jennifer Government's Nation States. It's an interesting little place, you create your own country, run it by your own set of rules, and you get to see if it fails or flourishes. Not too bad, eh?
The way you get it to work is you make decisions on various issues, such as taxes, laws, civil rights, etc. Your decisions formulate the policies the government takes.
For example, on my plate right now is an issue about public nudity. There are three stances - one, the hippy who wants public nudity laws to be banished; two, the liberal professor who wants public nudity to be mandated; three, the accountant who admonishes us to "think of the children" and reserve nudity to the privacy of the home because he doesn't want to see a naked person walking down the street dangling the fruits and berries. Fairly simple and straightforward. The country of Sheeple Rage is going to think of the children in this instance.
You also have the option of dismissing the issue. I have no idea what that will do for the government, but I guess I'll be finding out soon because there have been a few that I have dismissed. But more important was why I dismissed them.
One was about taxes and the other was about healthcare. There was two options for healthcare and three for taxes. All of the options were either so extreme on either side of the equation as for them to be unpalatable to me, or the middle opinion still left much to be desired. Since I had no desire to go in any of the directions, I dismissed the issues. We'll see if they come up again.
But even in a game like this, there is always a definite spin put on the prickly topics of the day. I was actually a bit put out that my viewpoints weren't even represented in such important topics as healthcare and taxes. In fact, they weren't even touched on, at least not in a way that I could swallow. In the taxes issue, I was given a choice of taxing the rich to give to the poor in the name of "evening things out," leaving taxes the way they were but giving subsidies to big business, or increasing taxes outrageously. Nothing that I find appealing as I'm a flat tax person. A straight 10% across the board, no deductions or adjustments allowed. That's all you need, and more importantly it's fair to every IMO. No more loopholes.
Maybe the topic will eventually come up again and I'll get something that tickles my fancy, but I somehow doubt it. It will be interesting to see how this shapes out. In any case, welcome to my new interest. Hope I hooked ya.

Television, Telly-vision!
"Hey Mr. General Public do you realize,
That we've got a generation here of staring eyes?
Anybody else remember that Stan Freeberg song? (Yes, I'm dating my humor. Sorry!) It's one of my favorites and is hilarous to boot. There's just something about having a burglar come into your home and have grandma throw him down with wrestling moves she learned from the TV (The step-over toe throw to be precise!).
Anyway, last night was the beginning of just one of my summer TV obsessions - So You Think You Can Dance. I love, love, LOVE this show. Mainly because I'm not a dancer but yeah, I like to dance. I would put my abilities to dance on about the same par as the couple on last night's show that they were broken up but still dancing together and did the ballroom type stuff. Except exchange "ballroom" for "ethnic and American folkdance" and you've got where my talent lies. Yes, I can dance a mean Aluenul around you, by God! The Maple Leaf Rag? I'm your girl.
But because I'm aware of where my abilities lie, I would never, EVER in a millionbilliontrillion years try out for one of these shows. NEVER. That's because I am fully aware that my abilites come nowhere near any of the others, and why waste my time and the judges' time, and end up getting humiliated to boot? Unlike that fool last night who tried out for the second year in a row. "Sexy." *shudder* I took one look at him, and just cringed. Because either there is something wrong with the boy (a mental retardation of some sort, autism, something of that nature) or there is something just WRONG with him. And if the latter is the case, then ew. Just, Ew.
He's 33 years old, and obviously still living with his mother. His "dream" is to become a "dancer" and last year's effort involved him doing the world's most awkward jumping toe touches I've ever seen. This year's effort showed that yes, he has been taking lessons, and yes, he has actually improved himself because while he's still awkwardly bad, he's not puke-worthy bad. But to come on a show to find the best amateur dance talent out there? I don't think so. And of course he and his mother have decided that he is the best. THE BEST, people! And no one can take his dream away! Especially not mean, nasty Nigel. Oh, no. The judges are all wrong and mean and nasty. Only to fools, my boy. Fools.
But last night we also saw some awesome dancing - especially from the ballroom dancing front. There were two girls that just sizzled (Stanislav's sister and the other girl) that were of course put through immediately. There was also the krumping guy who attempted the most hilarious and ingenious swing dance I've ever seen in order to prove that he could do other types of dancing. The Husband and I were crying with laughter it was so good and fun and spectacular. Talk about being inventive. This guy took the cake. I would have put him straight through to Vegas after that.
I think they're off to a good start. And I can't WAIT to see Benji again. He was so good and deserved to win last year, totally.
SYTYCD is only the first of many, many shows I intent to watch this summer. After my spring breakups with both Jack Bauer (I just couldn't take the intensity anymore. Can the poor guy just get a break? He needs to be able to go home with the girl for once.) and Lost (I am way too frustrated with that show to even begin to discuss it.) I was a bit adrift in my TV schedule. I filled my time with Dancing with the Stars (Apolo totally rocked it! Whoooo!), Deadliest Catch, Criminal Minds, CSI, The Amazing Race and some of my other long-standing favorites.
The next on my list of "must sees" in the coming months is the totally cheesy, totally awful "Pirates" reality show from the king of reality TV, Mark Burnett. I know it's going to be stupid. I don't care. I want to see people have to learn how to sail a masted ship and actually, you know, get callouses on their hands. I want to see drama. I want to see digging in the dirt for gold. Everybody wandering around saying "Arrrrr!" all the time. All those good and nasty things that make up good cheesy reality shows. I live for it!
Then there's Hell's Kitchen. I love Gordon Ramsey. Love him. Love his attitude. Love the little shits he roasts on the spit demanding they make a better risotto. Awesome stuff.
These are only the starting point for my summer obsessions. Anyone care to share theirs? Maybe I can pick up on some new crap to watch.

I Really Have to Stop Reading Bodice-Rippers and Start Reading More Important Stuff
Because the vast majority of the "serious" books that are listed below that I've read I actually read in high school. I didn't even read Lord of the Flies until I was forced to two years ago for a college English class! Ooof! Enough with the fluff!

Hi, My Name is Sarah, I'm a Movie Junkie!
I have blatantly stolen this from Sharon, because I'm a bit in the dumps today. The past 24 hours saw both a new arrival at the sheeple ranch and a departure. One of our adolescent girls gave birth to a baby boy last night at about 5 p.m., but he just didn't have the strength to stand. He made it through the night, so I took him to work to try and nurse him back to health. It didn't work. He died about two hours ago. Fuck. Again, at least we tried, right?
Anyway, the "rule" for this is that if you score more than 85, you have no life. Well, that would probably be me, cause I love movies - and I score at 128 with this list. So what. I've probably read many, many more books as well - again, proving that I have no life whatsoever.

A Meme. Because I care.
Stolen from Ezpy.
- What curse word do you use the most? Fuck. And I use it way too much.
- Do you own an ipod? We have three in our house. A 4G Nano (mine) a 30G 5th Gen (His) and a 60G 5th Gen (Mine).
- What person on your f-list do you talk to the most? Um, what's an F-list?
- What time is your alarm clock set to? 4:30 AM for work days to help get The Husband off to work and then to 6 AM for me.
- Do you still remember the first person you kissed? Yes.
- Do you remember where you were on September 11th, 2001? Yes. I was driving the kids into the sitter's and heard it on Mark and Brian. I thought they were doing a War of the Worlds thing. Freaked me the heck out.
- Would you rather take the picture or be in the picture? I hate having my picture taken, but I think that's resolving the more weight I lose. I could care less about taking pictures, however.
- What was the last movie you watched? In the theater: "A Bridge to Terabithia" On DVD: "Eragon"
- Do any of your friends have children? Yes.
- Has anyone ever called you lazy? Yup. And I am.
- Do you ever take medication to help you fall asleep? Yes. Lately Valium has been my friend in time of need.
- What CD is currently in your CD player? Well, I use an iPod, and right now I'm doing a Shuffle and "Kiss Me" by Sixpence None the Richer is on.
- Do you prefer regular or chocolate milk? I think I prefer regular milk. Whole and served over ice. Mmmm.
- Has anyone told you a secret this week? Not this week, no.
- When was the last time you had Starbucks? Well, I had Pony Espresso this morning for the first time in forever, and it's been about a month since I had Starbucks.
- Can you whistle? Somewhat.
- What is the first thing you notice about the opposite sex? Eyes, lips, biceps, tush.
- What are you looking forward to? Finishing the outfits for our vow renewal and actually starting on making my dress! A little more than a month to go. Eeek!
- Did you watch cartoons as a child? Heck yeah. Popeye, SuperChicken, Tom Slick, and the old school Bugs Bunny Roadrunner Show were my faves. Oh, and don't forget the Anime one with the five cat machines that combine to create Voltar? I think? What's the name of that one? As an adult, it's mostly Anime along with old-time favorites.
- Do you own any band t-shirts? Disciple and Red.
- What will you be doing in one hour? Working on Word documents. Excitement abounds.
- Is anyone in love with you? Yes. Truly, madly, deeply.
- What was the last song you heard? Tribute by Disciple.
- Last time you cried? Yesterday.
- Desktop computer or a laptop? Both
- Are you currently wanting any piercings or tattoos? Always. Hopefully Friday will see the completion of my upper back piece and touchups on the wolves. And I'm in the process of designing a wrist wrap that I want next. Bring on the ink!
- What's the weather like? Psychotic. It can't make up its mind if it wants to be cold and windy or hot and calm. Cut it out now!
- Would you ever date a girl/guy covered in tattoos? Yep.
- What did you do before this? Read through my blog roll and put up my own pissy whine about my weight bounce.
- When is the last time you slept on the floor? Well, it was on an airmatress but it had a hole in it and we had to keep using the pump to re-inflate it all night.
- How many hours of sleep do you need to function? Five, but to be a truly happy camper it needs to be around eight.
- Do you eat breakfast daily? Most of the time it's a protein shake but on occasion I have a sausage egg McMuffin minus the muffin or an egg and pepperjack cheese omelete with some bacon thrown in.
- Are your days fast-paced? Please. I'm a slug.
- What did you do last night? Finished up one of the shirts for the groomsman and finished up watching Eragon.
- Do you use sarcasm? Yep. But usually not in a cutting way with friends. I hope.
- How old will you be turning on your next birthday? 37
- Are you picky about spelling and grammar? Yep. I'm terrible about it. Then I go and blatantly misspell things and use bad grammar deliberately for effect. Hypocritical, but there you have it!
- Have you ever been to Six Flags? Yes.
- Do you get along better with the same sex or the opposite sex? I get along better with guys. But I do have some good girlfriends.
- Do you like mustard? It used to be deadly poison for me, until The Husband made me these delicious little appetizers using Little Smokies, pepperjack cheese and honey dijon mustard. Now honey dijon is food of the gods. All other mustards can take a long leap off a short cliff, though.
- Do you sleep on your side? Didn't used to unless I was snuggling up with The Husband. But since my surgery I have a lot for some reason. But I'm a stomach sleeper by preference.
- Do you watch the news? Not unless I want to have an aneurism.
- How did you get one of your scars? I was attempting to bring my roommate's Shar Pei back into the house and the little fucker bit into my hand. It's almost gone now 15+ years later.
- Who was the last person to make you mad? Unfortunately my children. They know how to push mom's buttons for sure.

Just for fun
And because it's surprisingly accurate. I saw this on both Allison's and Sharon's blogs. Thought I'd borrow it for mine.
| Your Life Path Number is 7 |
Your purpose in life is to find truth and meaning You are very spiritual, and you are interested in the mysteries of life. You are quite analytical and a great thinker. You have many theories and insights. A life of solitude is perfect for you. You need time to think and do things your way. In love, you are quite charming. You attract many with your confidence and wit. While you enjoy being alone, sometimes you take it to an extreme. You can become too isolated, shutting out loved ones and friends. Express yourself a little bit more, and you'll be surprised where it takes you! |

In an attempt to jump-start my holiday spirit
I'm going to answer some questions that were on both Marybeth's and Alison's blogs. Maybe it can keep me from being my normal Grinchy self this time of year.
20+ Holiday Questions
Egg Nog or Hot Chocolate?
Love them both. I make a great home-made egg nog, one that you can either spike or not (and more people than not actually want their nog un-spiked I have found). But I also love the store-bought thick crapnog and there's nothing better than a mug-full of hot chocolate to give you that special chocolate buzz with a hint of peppermint. Mmmmm.
Does Santa wrap presents or just sit them under the tree?
Wrapped. The only exception being the stuff that gets put inside the stocking. Or maybe a stuffed animal. Okay, both wrapped and unwrapped.
Colored or white lights on tree/house?
I don't care so long as it's one or the other. Nothing bugs me more than trees/houses with both white and colored lights on them. Coordination, people! Coordination! Oh, and no blinking lights! Especially when one strand blinks and then another. Have them go in running relays if you're going to have them blink. Ugh!
Do you hang mistletoe?
I'm not particularly fond of parasites, but mistletoe does have its uses. But to answer the question, no, not really. It's just another dead thing in my house.
When do you put your decorations up?
Here's where I become the Grinch. Christmas decorations (with the exception of the Advent Calendar and the Advent Wreath) do NOT go up until Christmas Eve. Decorations then come down on Epiphany, Jan 6. Period. End of Story. It's not Christmas until then, so why put up decorations until then? This is how we always did it growing up. From others I have spoken to, this is a German tradition, which makes sense for my family to follow seeing as how both sides are heavily German. I mean, when you have a town in Alsace/Lorraine that one of your family's names is from, hello! You're German! And no, I don't acknowledge France's occupation of that area. It's German, thankyouverymuch! But for The Husband, Christmas decorations should go up immediately after Thanksgiving. Ugh. Too much crap out for far too long, IMO. So, we've kind of come to a compromise on this. We didn't put up our tree until yesterday. I'll grumble about it, but I can live with it.
What is your favorite holiday dish (non-dessert)?
Hrm. This is a hard one. I think I'll have to settle for my mother's hearty winter soup. It's got keilbasca in it, and is definitely a great meal on it's own or a side dish.
Biggest Christmas peeve?
Again with the ranting here. I hate obnoxious Christmas music. Like the stuff all the modern musicians have done "jazzing" up all the old standards. It didn't need your help, buddy. Quit ruining the melody of Little Drummer Boy, mmmkay? You can't even sing along with them! Feh. And don't start playing that crap until the middle of December, either. When I turned on my radio the day after Thanksgiving and the station was playing some of the afore-mentioned Christmas tunes, I wanted to puke. Those that start playing it before Thanksgiving need to be firebombed. 'Nuff said.
What is your favorite holiday dessert/treat?
Aside from eggnog, I have to say the Busch d' Noel. Chocolate-y and creamy goodness all dressed up to look like a wooden log. Brilliant! I need to try to make my own this year I think. And if I could ever find them again, there is this bakery that makes these German anise-flavored cookies that are the cat's meow. My Grandfather was the one that always bought them and I never knew where he got them from so I'll have to figure out someway to get them. Kind of difficult seeing as how I don't even know what they're called. Aaargh.
Favorite holiday childhood memory?
The whole decorating the house on Christmas Eve day. And then the days when we would get to invite a friend over and we would either make taffy or make a gingerbread house. The best!
Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve?
All gifts are opened on Christmas Eve in my family - again, a German tradition. Then Santa/stocking gifts on Christmas Day. For The Husband's family, they open one gift on Christmas Eve and then everything else on Christmas Day. So now we do the one gift/all gifts thing. It really makes no difference in the end, right?
Garlands or Tinsel?
Showy and overdone. Tinsel only ends up coming out of the butt of the cat and garlands are just overdone drivel. Now a string of pretty beads is okay, but the big frou-frou stuff has got to go.
Snow: Love or Hate?
Love it. Don't get enough of it. That's the problem with living in a desert.
Can you ice-skate?
Never attempted. Yet.
Do you remember your favorite gift?
Last year The Husband bought me a pachinko machine. While it's not one of the old-fashioned ones and is instead very modern electronic, it still makes the same tink-tink-tink sounds that I'm addicted to from my childhood and I could play it for hours. There's also a whole story attached to it about how it finally got here that I'll share another day.
What's the most important thing about the holidays to you?
Being together with the ones you love.
What is your favorite holiday tradition?
Putting out your shoes for St. Nicholas on Dec. 6. Creeping out of bed in the wee hours of the morning to make St. Lucia rolls for mom and dad on Dec. 10. Midnight Mass. Shall I go on?
What tops your tree?
Well, I've never found the perfect star or angel, so right now a silly needlework angel that The Husband's grandmother made is on top of it. It helps him remember the good times with her and that's more important than something fashionable or outre.
Which do you prefer, giving or receiving?
Definitely giving. I'm not good at receiving gifts at all. Hate it.
Favorite Christmas song?
This is a hard one. I love Little Drumer Boy and Adeste Fideles. But I have to say that my favorite is Hark, The Herald Angels Sing. And only because we sang a kick-ass arrangement of it in my college choir.
What do you want for Christmas?
This year my list is topped by two things: a new tattoo and a new ear piercing(s). Body modification is the way to go for me this year. Hee! As much as I hate making gift lists, I sat down and wrote one out for The Husband to help him out. I've got a few books on there, a few DVDs (Gilbert & Sullivan and Dr. Who - never say that I'm not original!), and a few quilting books/tools. No clothes this year, thank you. Save that for next year when I'm (hopefully!) at goal.

Tagged. Again. *sigh*
- Explain what ended your last relationship.
Well, there was that whole thing about him cheating on me, and then not making up his mind about what he wanted even though I forgave him and eventually he decided that he wanted to be with a *different* girl and I ended up meeting The Husband when he moved out of my house and into The Husband's house. Heee! - When was the last time you shaved?
Yesterday. - What were you doing this morning at 8 a.m.?
Walking into work after dropping off the children at school. - What were you doing 15 minutes ago?
Wasting time online. - Are you any good at math?
Hell yeah! I am a "visual" mathematician. Drove my instructors crazy. My brain skips steps in complex problems. Can't show my work. - Your prom night?
Ahh, prom! I didn't go to my Senior Prom because my class were all wankers. But I did go to prom as a sophomore. Very fun. Stayed out really late. Went with awesome people. My date actually asked me in front of my then-boyfriend. Boyfriend gave permission because he couldn't afford to take me. Very wierd. He ended up going as well, but with someone else (we broke up for some reason). It was all good. - Do you have any famous ancestors?
None that I know of. We're all very bland. Although I have a cousin several times removed who used to be the head coach for the San Francisco 49ers. - Have you had to take a loan out for school?
Thank God, no. - Do you know the words to the song on your myspace profile?
I don't "do" Myspace. - Last thing received in the mail?
&*#*&!!## election thingies. - How many different beverages have you had today?
Two. Protein drink and crystal light. - Do you ever leave messages on peoples answering machine?
Yes, but I hate to talk to a machine. I never know what to say. - Who did you lose your CONCERT virginity to?
Heh, heh! Oingo Boingo's Day of the Dead concert in 1988. - Do you draw your name in the sand when you go to the beach?
Um, no. Why? - What was the most painful dental procedure you have had?
Toss up between braces and getting my cord cut. - What is out your back door?
Acres and acres of nothing. Then the mountains. Ahhhh! - Any plans for Friday night?
Umm, sleep? - Do you like what the ocean does to your hair?
Not particularily. - Have you ever received one of those big tins of 3 different popcorns?
Yes. They're disgusting. - Have you ever been to a planetarium?
Yes. The Griffith Observatory. Very nice. - Do you re-use towels after you shower?
Of course. It's not like I'm wiping dog poo off my body. It's water. The end. - Some things you are excited about?
Hrm. My fabric collection, my melting fat, my droopy clothing. - What is your favorite flavor of JELLO?
Depends on how it's used. Peach probably. - Describe your keychain(s).
I have far too many. They have way too many keys on them. One of them has a Coach snowflake pendant that The Husband spent way too much money on for a keychain fob. Another has a cheap-ass purple enormous safety pin (think four to five inches long) on it. A third has a small pink sting ray bean bag on it. - Where do you keep your change?
Either in the bottom of my purse or in a huge mason jar in the bedroom. - Do you sleep with the door to your room open or closed?
Closed. I'm paranoid that way. - Did you read this far? Consider yourself tagged.
I hate this. You can ignore it if you feel like it.

Links, links, we gotcher links! Hot, fresh links!
It seems like every time I turn around I'm finding a new site that is oh so freaking cool. Culminating with this one that has sent me into paroxysms of laughter while finally giving my brain a well-needed workout. So, I've made a few changes on the left and if you like I suggest checking them out. Because damn if they aren't the shit.

Hrmm. Below Average? Eh.
Alltogether, I suppose the test is not far off. It's far fewer questions than are on a regular IQ test, but I'll say it's a fair cop. I usually test out at five IQ points either way with other online tests. I much prefer being told that I'm a visual mathematician, though.

I always knew I was a bit off my rocker
But this kind of clinches it for me. Multi-dimensional wonderland? Yeah, if you consider "multi" to mean totally crazed and delusional. Hee!
| Your Brain's Pattern |
Your mind is a multi dimensional wonderland, with many layers. You're the type that always has multiple streams of thought going. And you can keep these thoughts going at any time. You're very likely to be engaged in deep thought - and deep conversation. |

A Dark and Stormy Night Indeed!
This year's 10 winners of the Bulwer-Lytton contest, AKA "Dark and Stormy Night Contest" (run by the English Dept. of San Jose State University), wherein one writes only the first line of a bad novel:
10) "As a scientist, Throckmorton knew that if he were ever to break wind in the echo chamber, he would never hear the end of it."
9) "Just beyond the Narrows, the river widens."
8) "With a curvaceous figure that Venus would have envied, a tanned, unblemished oval face framed with lustrous thick brown hair, deep azure-blue eyes fringed with long black lashes, perfect teeth that vied for competition, and a small straight nose, Marilee had a beauty that defied description."
7) "Andre, a simple peasant, had only one thing on his mind as he crept along the East wall: 'Andre creep... Andre creep... Andre creep.'"
6) "Stanislaus Smedley, a man always on the cutting edge of narcissism, was about to give his body and soul to a back alley sex-change surgeon to become the woman he loved."
5) "Although Sarah had an abnormal fear of mice, it did not keep her from eeking out a living at a local pet store."
4) "Stanley looked quite bored and somewhat detached, but then penguins often do."
3) "Like an over-ripe beefsteak tomato rimmed with cottage cheese, the corpulent remains of Santa Claus lay dead on the hotel floor."
2) "Mike Hardware was the kind of private eye who didn't know the meaning of the word 'fear'; a man who could laugh in the face of danger and spit in the eye of death -- in short, a moron with suicidal tendencies."
AND THE WINNER IS...1) "The sun oozed over the horizon, shoved aside darkness, crept along the greensward, and, with sickly fingers, pushed through the castle window, revealing the pillaged princess, hand at throat, crown asunder, gaping in frenzied horror at the sated, sodden amphibian lying beside her, disbelieving the magnitude of the frog's deception, screaming madly, 'You lied!"

So she thinks she has an original song?
Is it just me, or is Rihanna's song "SOS" a blatant ripoff of "Tainted Love" by Soft Cell? Damn. I could sing the whole damn song and it didn't sound bad with whatever it was that she sang tonight. If you're going to sample, sample - don't rip it all off. At least have *some* originality. Eeesh.
That said, Heidi's solo was THE BOMB! If Nigel had told her to go home (or Dmitri for that matter), I would have turned off the TV on this show forever. Not that I expect her to win, but damn. That girl could DANCE!

Every year I love reading these. For your reading pleasure . . .
Every year, English teachers from across the country can submit their collections of actual analogies and metaphors found in high school essays. These excerpts are published each year to the amusement of teachers across the country.
Here are last year's winners.....
1. Her face was a perfect oval, like a circle that had its two sides gently compressed by a Thigh Master.
2. His thoughts tumbled in his head, making and breaking alliances like underpants in a dryer without Cling Free.
3. He spoke with the wisdom that can only come from experience, like a guy who went blind because he looked at a solar eclipse without one of those boxes with a pinhole in it and now goes around the country speaking at high schools about the dangers of looking at a solar eclipse without one of those boxes with a pinhole in it.
4. She grew on him like she was a colony of E. Coli, and he was room-temperature Canadian beef.
5. She had a deep, throaty, genuine laugh, like that sound a dog makes just before it throws up.
6. Her vocabulary was as bad as, like, whatever.
7. He was as tall as a six-foot, three-inch tree.
8. The revelation that his marriage of 30 years had disintegrated because of his wife's infidelity came as a rude shock, like a surcharge at a formerly surcharge-free ATM machine.
9. The little boat gently drifted across the pond exactly the way a bowling ball wouldn't.
10. McBride fell 12 stories, hitting the pavement like a Hefty bag filled with vegetable soup.
11. From the attic came an unearthly howl. The whole scene had an eerie, surreal quality, like when you're on vacation in another city and Jeopardy comes on at 7:00 p. m. instead of 7:30.
12. Her hair glistened in the rain like a nose hair after a sneeze.
13. The hailstones leaped from the pavement, just like maggots when you fry them in hot grease.
14. Long separated by cruel fate, the star-crossed lovers raced across the grassy field toward each other like two freight trains, one having left Cleveland at 6:36 p. m. traveling at 55 mph, the other from Topeka at 4:19 p. m. at a speed of 35 mph.
15. They lived in a typical suburban neighborhood with picket fences that resembled Nancy Kerrigan's teeth.
16. John and Mary had never met. They were like two hummingbirds who had also never met.
17. He fell for her like his heart was a mob informant, and she was the East River.
18. Even in his last years, Granddad had a mind like a steel trap, only one that had been left out so long, it had rusted shut.
19. Shots rang out, as shots are wont to do.
20. The plan was simple, like my brother-in-law Phil. But unlike Phil, this plan just might work.
21. The young fighter had a hungry look, the kind you get from not eating for a while.
22. He was as lame as a duck - Not the metaphorical lame duck, either, but a real duck that was actually lame, maybe from stepping on a land mine or something.
23. The ballerina rose gracefully en Pointe and extended one slender leg behind her, like a dog at a fire hydrant.
24. It was an American tradition, like fathers chasing kids around with power tools.
25. He was deeply in love. When she spoke, he thought he heard bells, as if she were a garbage truck backing up.

Behold!
The power of the Internet!
This makes me remember fondly the days when there was that huge uproar over the girl that was sick and died of cancer or leukemia or something and then we found out that not only was she not dead, she wasn't even a real person and the person claiming to be her mom had just made it all up. And then the Internet community felt that they were being scammed, because you know, people had sent this "girl" PRESENTS and things like that and "talked" with her on the phone and all that. Scandalous!
